Trauma Counseling

Trauma-Focused Therapy can be beneficial to anyone who has experienced a traumatic event. By learning more about what you or a family member is experiencing, we can create a plan for addressing the concerns and developing healthier coping skills. If you or a loved one is suffering due to past traumas, call our Fort Worth office right away. Help is just around the corner.

At Christie Jones Counseling, we listen without judgement in a safe, confidential setting. Our role as counselors is to let you talk so we can discover areas that cause you fear, pain, and sadness. We gently guide the conversation to those topics to help you work through traumatic events and retrain your thought processes surrounding them. This empowers you to begin healing and moving forward.

Trauma-Focused Therapy (TFT) centers on understanding the effect the trauma has had on an individual’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. TFT offers skills and strategies to assist in better understanding, coping with, and processing emotions tied to traumatic experiences. The goal is to help the individual create a healthier mentality and perception of the experience.

What Causes Trauma?

Trauma is caused by events that shock or terrify an individual, especially if the individual was powerless to stop them. Some examples include rape or sexual molestation; witnessing or being a victim of violence; losing a loved one; serious illness or injury; natural disasters; and military service in war zones. Others might carry trauma from severe bullying or volatile home lives. Whatever the cause, counseling can help you identify it and take back power over your thoughts and emotions.

Signs of Trauma

Trauma manifests in different ways for different people, but some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Social Withdrawal
  • Appearing Shaken or Disoriented
  • Refusal to Talk
  • Nightmares
  • Irritability
  • Poor Concentration
  • Mood Swings
  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Sadness
  • Emotional Outbursts
  • Panic Attacks
  • Avoidance of Triggers

Trauma in Children

Children sometimes exhibit trauma in ways that adults do not. Besides the signs listed above, children’s symptoms might manifest as:

  • Separation Anxiety
  • New or Worsened Fears
  • Excessive Worry Over Wellbeing of Loved Ones
  • Emotional Regression
  • Reenactment of the Event
  • Inappropriate Behavior
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Eating Disturbance

  • Avoiding School

If a survivor of any age exhibits self-harm, violence, or suicidal behavior, call emergency services right away.

The traumatized adult or child might seem fine at first, but symptoms can occur at any time, even much later in life. The person might go to great lengths to avoid situations or topics that remind them of the traumatic event, but talking is a crucial part of the healing process. When trauma becomes so severe that it decreases your quality of life, it’s time to seek help from our compassionate team at Christie Jones Counseling.
